When Daddy Got A 'Fro

(Music and lyrics by Scott Ryan)

Gonna tell you all a story 'bout a long time ago;
It's a story that my daddy wouldn't want you all to know.
Nineteen seventy-five or so
Was the year that my daddy went and got himself a 'fro.

          He'd seen 'em on the screen and in all the magazines
          And there wasn't any telling him no.
          Once he had it in his head
          It didn't matter that I said
          Daddy, no,
          Daddy, please,
          Daddy, don't you get a 'fro . . .

                    Everybody said
                    Come on down, watch your daddy get a 'fro;
                    See him turned into a feller that you wish you didn't know.
                    Times are gonna come and times are gonna go,
                    But you never will forget when your daddy gets a 'fro.

They wrapped him in a bib and they strapped him in a chair
And they stuck a bunch of curly little thingies in his hair
And they slapped him in a cap like swimmers used to wear
And they told him not to move and they left him sitting there.

          I snook and took a look while my daddy read a book
          But the time was a-draggin' on slow
          When we finally saw his head
          I remembered how I'd said
          Daddy, no,
          Daddy, please,
          Daddy, don't you get a 'fro . . .

                    But everybody said
                    Come on in, see your daddy with his 'fro;
                    He's been turned into a feller that you'll wish you didn't know.
                    Times are gonna come and times are gonna go,
                    But you never will forget when your daddy gets a 'fro.

It was frizzy like a poodle and a-stickin' out to there;
It was saggy in the middle where he'd lost a little hair.
A good stiff breeze set it flyin' everywhere
But he really seemed to like it so I guess he didn't care.

          As the years rolled on
          It just collapsed till it was gone
          But I'd learned my lesson, and so
          I've had a lot of fun,
          But whatever I've done,
          Well, I never never
          Never never
          Never got a 'fro . . .

          (Well, I might have got a mullet
          But I never got a 'fro . . . )

                    Everybody sing
                    Come on down, watch your daddy get a 'fro;
                    See him turned into a feller that you wish you didn't know.
                    Times are gonna come and times are gonna go,
                    But you never will forget when your daddy gets a 'fro.
